Pop-Local

In order to live in balance and harmony, we need popular culture and local culture to be integrated. However the world is trying to globalize everything. I assume this type of globalization is more like simplification. Many countries are in a pursuit of a dream which creates a society with only one language, currency and flag. But unconsciously, we are destroying natural and cultural diversity while glorifying the economic prosperity.

Like these kind of countries, also most people are avoiding to find their own styles, understand their own desires and cultures instead of keeping up with popular culture. Because it is way more easy to exist while doing something that whole world accepts. However I'm not saying that pop culture is totally wrong. Naturally, popular and current things are coming forward in our lives. The issue is about doing something that we do not want or need, but we do it just because it belongs to pop culture.

I'd like to mention a lecture about local culture from Wade Davis. He is saying that we all share the same adaptive imperatives. "We're all born. We all bring children into the world. We go through initiation rites. We have to deal with the inexorable seperation of death. So it shouldn't surprise us that we all sing, we all dance, we all have art." He continues his conversation with an important sentence: "But what's interesting is the unique cadence of the song, the rhythm of the dance in every culture." This is the best explanation of why we have to protect our local culture instead of getting stucked on popular culture.

It is so good to know that we have countless different cultures in the world. This makes us valuable. If the world would all share the same culture, people would feel lonely and insignificant. Cultures are colorizing our lives. To protect a culture means to protect the world. Also we can add some features from our cultures to popular culture and share it with the world. In the meantime we can take the advantages of popular culture and make it diversified.

As a result, people should not discount local culture while being fascinated by popular culture. We must consider both equally because I assume we all want our children to learn our own cultures. Upon any terms, people need popular culture and local culture together in harmony.
